The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking a highly qualified Research Assistant‐Biometrics 
to be based at AfricaRice Saint‐Louis, Senegal.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision  of the  Biometrician, the  Research  Assistant will  contribute to the analyses  of  data  generated  in  different projects,  enhancing  the  quality,  usefulness  and 
availability of knowledge and technology within the rice sector to support and improve the well‐being in Africa.  
Specifically, s/he will: 

  • Assist in analyzing large multi‐year and multi‐location data sets collected from trials in Africa using appropriate statistical software; 
  • Advise  AfricaRice  staff  based  in  Saint  Louis  in  planning  field  experiments  and biophysical and socioeconomic surveys and data analysis; 
  • Prepare  reports,  studies  and  contribute  to  publish  scientific  articles  in  refereed journals documenting research progress; 
  • Assist the Biometrician  providing technical training  in  applied statistics, supporting scientists, visiting scientists, trainees and national program scientists in team‐based research projects; 
  • Perform any other duties in line with these assignments and as required by the needs of the Center.

Job Qualifications & Skills / Selection Criteria

Qualifications/Selection Criteria 
Education: M.Sc. in biostatistics or statistics or equivalent;   
Work  Experience:  At  least  two  (2)  years’  experience  in estatistics  for  agricultural environmental and social sciences; 
Key  Competencies  Required:  a  fundamental understanding  of experimental  designs  is desired;  experience  with  commercial eand  open‐source statistical  computer  packages  like GENSTAT, R, STATA, etc.; ability to work under pressure in a multicultural environment. 
The ideal candidate must be able to explain statistics in non‐technical terms. 
The candidate should communicate fluently (orally and in writing) in English or French with a 
good working knowledge of the other language.

  • This  is  a  regionally  recruited  position  open  to  citizens  from AfricaRice  member countries only.

  • The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility for renewal.
