Achieve and sustain certification standard surveillance as a strategy to eradicate poliomyelitis, to reduce mortality caused by measles, and to eliminate neonatal tetanus. Additionally strengthen Integrated Disease Surveillance & Response (IDSR) and routine immunization against Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) diseases for all children in the first five years of life and for all women of child-bearing age.

Description du Poste et Responsabilités

Description of duties:
1- Prioritizes all sites (hospitals, health centers, health stations, health posts, private hospitals and clinics, holy water sites, traditional healers, etc.) as "high", "medium", or "low" priority. After completing prioritization, develops a realistic short, medium and long-term operational plan to conduct active case search and sensitization.
2- Urgently investigates all "hot Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases". Examines all cases to complete a care seeking questionnaire and for late cases, conducts the after 60th day follow up clinical evaluations
3- Coordinates all IDSR activities in the assigned zones and Woredas with emphasis to AFP
4- Conducts out break investigation whenever there is clinically classified or virologically confirmed polio. Conducts outbreak investigations when necessary for other causes and prepare an outbreak investigation report.
5- Submits monthly/bimonthly activity reports to WHO/EPI, and gives a copy to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Regional Health Bureau, and Zonal Health Department.
6- Conducts in service training to the health staff at every level on of AFP/measles/ Neonatal Tetanus (NNT)
7- Establishes good working relations with FMOH, regional health bureau, Zonal Health Departments, Woreda Health Offices, and health facility staff. Encourages the heads to designate an AFP/ measles/IDSR focal person at every level. Keeps database of health facility AFP focal persons and update regularly.
8- Organizes and supervises social mobilization activities to encourage reporting of AFP cases by the community.
9- Collaborates with various sector institutions and international organizations through appropriate channels on surveillance of the relevant diseases and EPI.
10- Checks the availability and provides and/or assists on how to get the necessary logistics at every level (case investigation forms, specimen bottles, potent vaccine, functional refrigerators, steam sterilizers, and AD syringes and needles, safety boxes etc.).
11- Uses the AFP active search opportunity to collect, compile, and analyse routine EPI data and IDS reports. Ensures laboratory feedback reaches to the reporting clinicians.
12- Assists with timely utilization and retirement of surveillance funds at every level.
13- Identifies research priorities and promotes research in the relevant disease.
14- Carries out any other assignments as may be prescribed.

Profil et critères de sélection du candidat


Doctor of Medicine


MDs with masters of public health will have an added advantage. Persons with PhD in epidemiology or public health may be considered

Technical expertise in public health and epidemiology, planning, program management and coordination of health programs, especially as it relates to surveillance, outbreak investigation of vaccine preventable diseases and other diseases under surveillance and routine immunization; ability to train others, familiarity with polio eradication, measles mortality reduction, neonatal tetanus elimination activities and strategies as well as key routine and supplemental immunization activities. 


Working knowledge of computer software with spread sheet and data analysis skills.

A minimum of five years' work experience in public health with emphasis in surveillance, EPI and/ or other child health programs.


Experience in surveillance is an added advantage, UN experience

Excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English. Knowledge of other UN languages would be an advantage.

Additional Information:
Annual remuneration: USD 19,331 Payable in ETB

Duty station: Ethiopia/Dire Dawa
